Andrew M. Spingler
Andrew Spingler founded The Focal Point in 1989 to introduce the principles of information architecture and design to the emerging field of courtroom graphics. Andy’s interest in the field began when he worked with the accounting firm of KPMG, where one of his responsibilities was helping partners prepare their testimony as expert witnesses in a variety of civil litigation matters. He utilized the tools of the nascent desktop publishing industry to create clear, sophisticated, and persuasive graphics that illuminated the core of their lines of reasoning when they testified at trial.
Now, with over 20 years of experience pioneering a creative process to evaluate and simplify courtroom presentations, Andy and The Focal Point team specialize in working with trial lawyers to make complex cases easier to understand and more persuasive to juries. He has provided these services in several hundred cases, including the defense team in Colorado v. Kobe Bryant, the prosecution in California v. Scott Peterson, working with the University of California to achieve one of the largest settlements ever involving DNA coding for human growth hormone, and working with defense counsel to achieve a summary judgment ruling against the State of New Mexico in a multi-billion dollar toxic tort case.
In addition to his leadership role at The Focal Point, Andy has spoken and published on the subject of visual communication in the courtroom for the ABA, California Continuing Education of the Bar (CEB), the California Judges Association, and numerous law firms. Andy is a CPA and holds a BA in Business Economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He lives in New Mexico with his wife, Linda, and their three children.
“It is not enough to fight. It is the spirit which we bring to the fight that decides the issue.”
